The Camino de Santiago in summer

During the summer is when more pilgrims decide to walk the Camino de Santiago. Good weather and holidays are the main reasons why this time of year is so successful. However, this is not the most recommended season for several reasons. In this post we are going to tell about the advantages and disadvantages of traveling the Camino in summer. Let’s go there!

ADVANTAGES

TRERE ARE MANY PARTIES

In summer, most of the towns on the Camino de Santiago celebrate their patron saint festivities, so if you make your pilgrimage between June and August, you can enjoy many local festivities. This will allow you to discover even more the culture and traditions of the places you are visiting and meet the people who live in them.

THE DAYS ARE LONGER

In summer the days are longer, therefore, you will have more hours of light to complete your stages. However, if you are going to arrive late at the hostel, you should book it in advance, since at this time of year they are usually full.

LESS WEIGHT IN YOUR BACKPACK

In summer there is no need to carry bulky warm clothes. That is why in summer, it is recommended to use a backpack of 20 or 30 liters, while in winter it is recommended that they have a capacity of 50 or 60 liters.

A GOOD TIME TO RIDE THE CAMINO BY BIKE

The rain is a bad ally of the bike pilgrims. Mud on the road surface, or even the road when it is wet, can easily cause skids and falls. In summer there is less chance of rain so it is usually one of the best times to cycle the path.

DISADVANTAGES

ACCOMMODATION

In summer there is a large influx of pilgrims, so the hostels are usually full. For this reason, it is very important that you book your hostel in advance. In this way you will avoid being left without a place.

HIGH TEMPERATURES

In the summer months, between June and August, both Spain and Portugal register high temperatures. Walking on paths where there is no shade can make it harder for you to finish the stages.

If you want to avoid the heat, it is best to get up early and start walking early to finish the stages before the hottest hours arrive.

SERVICES ARE COLLAPSED IN SUMMER

The large influx of pilgrims in summer means that many of the services are saturated. We are not only going to find this problem in hostels, as we mentioned before, but it can also be difficult to find a place in bars and restaurants to eat.

To avoid this you can choose to take less popular routes such as the camino primitivo.

At ALBERGUES DEL CAMINO we are lovers of the Camino de Santiago in all its versions, so whatever time you want to do the Camino, do not let anything stop you. Have a good way , pilgrim!
